Hyperhidrosis is thought to be caused by over-activity of part of the nervous system (the sympathetic nervous system) that regulates production of sweat by the sweat glands in the skin. The result is a production of sweat that exceeds our body's requirement for maintaining a healthy temperature.
This excessive sweating can occur in localized areas like the underarms (called axillary hyperhidrosis), the hands (palmar hyperhidrosis), the feet (plantar hyperhidrosis) or on the face (facial hyperhidrosis). Hyperhidrosis occasionally affects the mid-body or thighs. When many parts of the body are affected, the condition is called generalized hyperhidrosis.
A variety of treatments have traditionally been available to control the symptoms of hyperhidrosis. These include topical solutions, water iontophoresis and an evolving list of drugs. Those who have tried these remedies often experience a less than satisfactory reduction in their symptoms or report unacceptable side-affects. While surgery may be an option, the down-time, expense and possible surgical complications are considerations.
The real breakthrough came with use of the popular wrinkle remedy BOTOX, a protein that temporarily paralyzes targeted portions of the sympathetic nervous system. BOTOX is injected just beneath the skin surface with a tiny needle. Normal activity can be resumed immediately following your BOTOX treatment, and patients usually experience a 90% reduction in treatment zone perspiration within 48 hours. The full effect, usually including a reduction in sweat-related odor, can take place within a week. BOTOX treatment for hyperhidrosis will significantly reduce excessive sweating in most of our patients for nearly a year.
